"It bothers you doesn't it? ... I think you can't imagine. Why anyone would choose a different life from the one you've got. Why anyone might want something other than a big house with a big lawn, a fancy car, a job in an office. Why anyone would choose anything different than what you'd choose."

I finished this book a few weeks ago now and still can't seem to find the words to talk about it. It was a book that I found myself wrapped up in while reading, drawn to the characters and their lives. I found myself just so immersed in the pages watching the choices that they were making and wondering how everything would turn out. This book was so smart. The way that the author would show different perspectives and ideas without giving an answer to which was correct was just perfection. I felt like it made me feel for the characters that much more and sympathize with the situations that they found themselves in. But the ending of this book left me wanting. This could be a me thing (and really probably is) - it just all felt too open. I still had questions when I finished. It was such a compelling and complex story but the ending left me wanting a bit. That's the best way that I can explain it. And that's just me - I am sure there are plenty of others who don't feel the same way. But I'm also finding that this is one of those books that has stuck with me - with characters that I continue to think about off and on weeks later. What a unique reading experience! I'm eager to read more by this author in the future for sure. I'm landing on four stars overall but may end up bumping it up at some point.

Readers who enjoy character driven books that you can sink into should give this book a try. I haven't seen the series adaptation yet but I definitely plan on watching it soon. I'm so glad that I finally pulled this one off of my own shelves.

DNF @ 23%

There are so many people I know who loved this book but I can't continue it. It's soooo boring. 23% and there is still no real plot insight. Instead, there are a bunch of stereotypes of characters and a page long background story for basically every character ever mentioned in this book. Ugh. No thanks.

I love Celeste Ng’s writing style. She writes such flawed characters that you can’t help but root for (Mia obvi). My only thing is sometimes there’s too many people to focus on and it feels like some of them don’t get enough depth (Izzy)

I had a hard time keeping my train of thought with this one. I know there have been lots of rave reviews, but I felt there were over details in the parts that didn't need them and not enough in the parts that did.
