Not my favorite. I was bored for most of the book and just didn’t get into the enemies-to-lovers trope for these two. No chemistry for me. But it was enjoyable to be back in this world even without Kate and Curran. It makes me want to go back and read the last few books in that series.

HOLY SHIT
OKAY I'M JUST STABBING IN THE DARK HERE, BUT I'M BETTING ONE OF MY KIDNEYS THAT ELARA IS A THEOPHAGE. OR MAYBE A GODDESS. PRETTY SURE A GODDESS

I'M WAITING FOR THE NEXT BOOK I'M SO EXCITED.

re-read Kate Daniels so of course re-read this and really shouldn't have because we still don't have the second book in this series and i am so sad because i neeeeeeeeeeeeeed it
this was such a joy to re-read. one of the best true actual enemies to lovers
but i really need the second one for real okay

okay, i re-read my favourite parts this morning and i'm returning it now. but i had some thoughts to share - the thing Hugh says at the end to Lamar, oh what if Elara heard that? my feewings. My poor little feelings.

I seriously adored this book. I don't want to wait for more. I need more now. I CANNOT WAIT FOR KATE'S LAST BOOK.

I have such a book hangover right now.

OH.MY.GAWD. could not put it down.

feelings. i have them. better than expected. I NEED MORE.

4.5 solid stars.

You will want to read this book before Kate 10. I read that somewhere.

Hey! Its been a while, between being a human cafeteria for a newborn, and all the dirty diapers, its really hard to make time to read, let alone write a review. The little guy doesnt like to sleep for more than 30 minutes during the day.

HUGH! I have been waiting with bated breath since they announced they were writing a Hugh book. And I was not disappointed. There was action, Hugh is super sexy, there was drama. What more can you ask for? Hugh's Iron Dogs come get him and stop him from drinking himself into an early grave. See, Roland took away his love and magic, so poor Hugh is having a hard time coping. Thats alright, because it made a good read. So Hugh has 300 ish soldiers to keep safe, and keep fed, clothed, and sheltered. Did I not mention that hes broke? Well, hes broke. His Centurions found a way to keep the Iron Dogs sheathed in luxury. OK, not really, it was just a deal to keep them fed, clothed, and sheltered. It however, comes at the cost of marriage. To Hugh! Lucky lucky girl.

So blah blah, Hugh marries Elara, the leader of the settlement that has agreed to take in the Iron Dogs for protection. The outside world is supposed to think its a real marriage, so when they have guests they put on a front. Which I loved. Their back and forth snipping really reminded me of the back and forth teasing my Husband and I have. (I promise its a loving back and forth)

Through unknown enemies, and known enemies, Elara and Hugh need to show each other that they can be trusted not to back out of their deal. Can they do it?

Youll have to read the book to find out! Hint: Its a pretty good book, and it was only book 1. :)

I had a bit of a struggle getting into this first book of The Iron Covenant series. As a spin-off to the Kate Daniels series, I was looking forward to reading this. But ... I have to be honest. It's been awhile since I had read the last book in the KD series, so I was feeling a bit confused for part of the book. Even though it says that this book can be read as a stand alone novel, it really does help A LOT if you have a good working knowledge of the world set up in the previous series. Having said that, though, it didn't take too long to find myself interested in this new setting with new lead characters.

I will say this ... the Hugh in this book is a far cry from the Hugh who caused all sorts of havoc in the KD books. I really loved Hugh's character in this story. He was, by far, my favorite character of the story. His life story was so tragic in so many ways, and he really had been almost bred to be an awful person ... and he was. Except in this story we see that there is a lot more to Hugh than we realized when we were viewing him through Kate Daniels' eyes in her series. The nuance in his character was the best part of this book.

Elara, on the other hand ... well, I didn't warm up to her as much. She seemed to mostly exist as a griping irritant in Hugh's life, and I was not a big fan of the "I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. Wait .. maybe not" romance of this book. I do understand how their constant bickering was actually a blessing for both of them. I get it. It was just irritating to me. And that affected how much I ended up liking Elara as a character. But her actions at the end of this story threw a huge new angle to this series, and I can't wait to see what happens in the future books coming up.

The writing team of Ilona Andrews still have great skill in creating heart pounding action, complicated and interesting characters, and great romance. This looks to be another hit series for them. Four stars for this one. I really liked it.

Wow. Here I was mourning the fact that Kate and Curran are leaving me soon but damn if I can’t wait for more Hugh and Elara!!!

Is it asking too much for a brother/sister moment in Magic Triumphs?!
