I have to admit that it were ages that I didn't have so much fun reading a book, ages! Even if I'm a long time reader of Ilona Andrews I was shocked by the amount of battles that this book packs, I was laughing and then I was worried and then I was laughing again. Best book of the last year at last regarding urban fantasy.
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!

I almost wasn't going to read this. I had been intrigued by Hugh when he had appeared in the previous books but wasn't sure whether i could read a whole book about him but figuring there would be stuff in it i would need to know when i came to read [bc:Magic Triumphs|17333180|Magic Triumphs (Kate Daniels, #10)|Ilona Andrews|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1502893641s/17333180.jpg|24064368] I dutifully picked this up first and then literally could not put it back down till I finished.
Right from the beginning i was pulled into the story and I liked that we got to see a little of Hugh's beginnings as it helped to be able to step back and see him more fully than we had previously in the other books with the things he had done in Roland's name.
The story itself really flowed and pulled the reader with it. Right from the beginning the tension between Elara and Hugh was present and I loved the interraction between them. Their relationship was like a battle and it was both compelling and fun to watch. There were a number of different threads in the story and every single one of them kept my attention.
I am literally stepping straight from this to Magic Triumpohs but i will most definitely be reading the rest of Hugh's trilogy.
5 magnificent stars!

What can I say? I loved it! It was really nice being able to get to know Hugh and to see other parts of the post shift world. I am excited to see more!
The bar has been set high. Hugh, you redeemed villain...or are you? Elara...what in the world are you?! I don’t feel like writing a long review. Ilona Andrews did not disappoint. Still left room for growth in the story and I like that fact that this will be a trilogy. It’s cool to see other stories and perspectives from within his world and outside of Kate Daniels.
The cast away son
I always enjoyed High in the Late Daniel's books. He has been ruthless and cunning, but also funny and entertaining. It was good to see Him evolving into his own person in this novel and becoming the man he can be without the influence of Roland. I enjoyed the ability to see Him with his Iron Dogs and see him rebuild his family.

It took a bit to get into it, but once I did it was everything I expect from this world.
Rating: 4.5 stars
I didn't know what to expect with this book but all I did know is that Hugh was a villain I love to hate (from the Kate Daniels series). This book humanized him without excusing all the evil things he's done. It just explained what a complicated character he is and I loved that. I loved knowing how his past shaped him and how because of Elara, he's a work in progress.
And how AWESOME is Elara?!? I mean, she's everything a heroine should be. The bantering between her and Hugh was so enjoyable that I couldn't get enough!!
Can we talk about the fight scenes? No one can write a fight scene like Ilona Andrews and I always feel like I'm in the middle of the chaos -- it's fantastic!
I can't wait to see what book 2 will bring!!!

Very good spin off to Kate Daniels series. I always liked Hugh as a character and I like how he's being fleshed out in this novel. Elara is an interesting new character and her story is intriguing. Appearance of Ascanio, Andrea and Rafael just made it better. I'm eagerly waiting for more books in this series as well as the original one.
Ilona Andrews are some of my favorite authors.
The story of Hugh's redemption.
Hugh has lost himself after Roland casts him aside. However, his Iron Dogs find him and Hugh is desperate to save them.
Elara has her own enemies and is desperate to save her people too.
Can they join forces? If not can they at least convince the rest of the world that they have, so it will leave them alone? (Love their sparing.)

I really wanted to hate Hugh because of everything he’s done but I just couldn’t. I love him. Possibly more than Curran *gasp*! Oh he’s still an a hole but he’s just so sarcastic and I feel like he’s turning into a real human.
