I don’t know exactly how to feel about it yet. So much happened that it felt rushed over. The final fight scene felt extremely rushed too. Like:
1. Penny broke up with her boyfriend, happened in two pages after we got a lot of talk about how perfect he was in the first book
2. Baz and Simon are having problems throughout the whole book and there is barely any interaction between them. Their problems not solved because they DONT TALK
3. Agatha being kidnapped just seemed forced
4. We glossed over the whole vampires want to be magicians by killing Braden and not really knowing about him. He was a flat villain, a villain because we needed one?
5. The cliffhanger? Really? I’d rather this have been a road trip where baz and Simon fixed their problems and running into problems as they meet and navigate magical creatures and their rules
I wasn’t satisfied by anything that happened. Where the fuck was character development? Baz is still cool, confident and hopelessly in love with Simon (the same). Simon has become depressed and self deprecating, believes he’s not good enough for baz, goes fucking berserk if anyone flirts with baz, all around acts like an edgy bastard (not in a bad way) the whole time. Penelope loses her ability to think on her feet and is less confident. Agatha becomes a little less useless than usual.

I wished I loved this as much as the first book, but the world that made the first book so great just wasn't there. Simon was clueless and the plot just kinda meandered along until it ended with a weak puff. Readable, but a disappointment after the brilliant first book.
This was an interesting sequel and I enjoyed every moment of it. I cannot wait until the third (and final??) book is released. Simon and Baz are still both idiots in love and I'm curious to see what choices Simon makes as things continue.
⭐️3.8 lol I enjoyed our heros significantly more in this sequel. At least w Baz and Simon, I felt their decisions and reaction made way more sense for what was happening around them. It could have been longer and focused more on the trauma they experienced in the first book, but it was enough that I will accept it lol. Plus, I cannot resist a good YA road trip story 💖 READ BETWEEN THE SPINES JUN 2023
