I liked this a bit more than the first one, but I need more! That damn cliffhanger.
Well that just kinda...ended?
Backing up.
This is the second in the Simon Snow series. We have moved away from Harry Potter and are firmly into the Twilight series now (that plus a road-trip across America!)
I enjoyed it. It wasn't amazing but certainly enjoyable.
I do hope in Rainbow Rowell's next book series she'll stop with the shifting first-person perspectives. Either stick with one narrator or go to 3rd. The back and forth gets frustrating.

whatever the hell you think this book is gonna be, it sure as fuck is not going to be anywhere close to that.
to me, this book is perfect in so many ways. to list a few:
• its reminiscent of percy jackson and supernatural (ofc you cant help think of supernatural bc of the title, but still) and the combo works!? so well?!
• simon and baz... i mean... if you didnt love them in fangirl or carry on, this book will do the trick. they‘re heartbreaking but beautiful and worth it
• penny. i mean you really can‘t help but stan. she‘s a force of nature. also, her character development is astonishingly well written, it was so powerful.
i don’t know what else to say. besides talking about mental health issues, homophobia, social injustice and tackling self-identity problems etc, this book brings an entirely magical and surpising plot with it. i especially love the parts where you regocnize the rainbow that wrote eleanor and park. yeah, i don’t know what else to say, go read this book. its beautiful and you‘re welcome

I LOVED this book. I really liked the detail of it made the book so fun to read. I also love the new character introduced and am hoping it goes somewhere in the next book. I was really flying through this book as well. Even though it doesn't take place in the school, it's such a super fun read, especially learning about different magikal people in the world.

Excellent story with tons of adventure. This book seemed to suffer a bit from sequel syndrome. The interpersonal relationships weren’t quite as well developed as the first book. While I realize that the story needed a reason for the characters to start their American road trip somewhere far from their destination, I was annoyed by the entire Penelope boyfriend storyline, a relationship that supposedly existed for years but was never mentioned in the first book and serves little to no purpose in this book took up way more time in this book than necessary. I would much rather have had that time spent developing New Blood group activities and culture.
Overall still a fun read.

3.5 stars rounded down because I love Rainbow Rowell, as a writer and as a person, buuut I just don’t think I get this series. This one started off much more promising than Carry On, and then it just sort of never got there for me. I constantly feel like I don’t know or understand these characters because the first book was like jumping into a show during Season 7 and constantly going, “Wait...what?” I wish we could read about their years at Watford to feel grounded in the universe a little more. I literally don’t understand who Simon is or what his personality is like, even after Fangirl and Carry On.
I don’t like how magic works in these books. The spells annoy me. I do like the Baz/Simon dynamic, but again, I feel like I never actually get what’s going on with them. I liked the roadtrip aspect, but the overall plot was meh.
Will this stop me from reading the next installment? Probably not.
