This book was impressive. The story was amazingly told and all of the characters were so complex and human. It highlighted a piece of history that until very recently has often been swept under the rug. Some of the stories by these five narrators end in tragedy, some in healing, and some in both. I found myself wishing the best for all of them. Sometimes I got my wish and sometimes I didn't.

Good digs into the horrors of Indian schools and the long lasting repercussions they had on individuals and entire communities. She also gives you a bit of hope that while things can never be truly mended for the people who were impacted, they can still find some form of healing and reconnect to the things they lost.

Such an important story for all to read. However, the writing itself is very telling and less showing. We don’t get a deep development of characters as the text itself is rushed. The content is deeply reflective and essential for all humans to know and understand.

This book is a tough read, and so important. Each chapter provides the point of view of a different character (and circles back to some of the same characters), and at first, much of the book was focused on recounting the horrors they experienced as children at the Mission School. One child's chapter after another, the terrible stories were relentless. I enjoyed the book more as the story moved on to the characters as young adults and later in life, with their stories intertwining and showing the characters trying to survive and have a life after such trauma. Although the book moved on from specific first-person narratives while at the school, the author does an amazing job at showing how these experiences affected them (and their loved ones) for the rest of their lives.

This book is beautifully written, and the stories it tells are in some cases incredibly sad and in others very uplifting. Following the characters in this book felt special and I would definitely recommend Canadians read this book.
