This is an incredibly emotional story revolving around 5 residential school survivors in British Columbia. This fictional story honours all the Indigenous children who paid the heavy price of colonialism, and it challenges readers to see the people behind the stories we hear in the news. This book is filled with compassion.

The only difficulty I had with it was the timeline. There were several time jumps, and I was a bit confused, trying to figure out how much time had passed, and whether things were linear or not (which only happened once, which confused me even more than if it was clearly not linear).

This book is a reflective and tough read while still remaining hopeful that the survivors of residential schools (when given the resources and community help to heal) have the hope of finding some peace. It really highlights the resiliency of Indigenous peoples during canadas darkest moments in history. The love between children and parents, friends, and the power of community really hits home. It’s a tough but important read I will be recommending to everyone.

Wow this was SO GOOD. I liked the format of switching between characters each chapter. Each character was fully formed, interesting and complicated. Their relationships, pains and joys all felt very real.  If you read this and loved it I would suggesting finding some interviews with Michelle Good about the book and her mother’s experience, they are very interesting also.

A difficult read, but well work it. Tells the interconnected stores of 5 Indigenous children as they survived residential schools and the impact that had on their lives.
