What Hobsbawm tries to convey in this book is a deep sense of intellect which runs throughout his whole life and career. These essays are succinct and manage to give such complex ideas a breakdown that any layman can understand cliometrics or post-modern history. Hobsbawm shows a brilliant aptitude for combining raw intelligence with literary/oratorical style, present in all his texts and talks. Particularly I enjoyed his writings on Marx and his influence on the development of the historical method, which is driving me deeper down the rabbit hole towards 18 Brumaire. Wonderful.
