I just don't understand why this book had to lean on the romantic tension between Beatriz and Santiago when I feel like that's not what the story is about at all?? It kept throwing me off and there were just other things going on where I was like "Huh??"

“This is me trying” writes teenage characters beautifully. They are complex — navigating responsibilities, emotions and desires that can sometimes be childish and other times mature. There is a lot of hurt and guilt that the characters balance as they try to move forward with their lives.

In terms of handling grief, it was overall well-done. I always struggle to comment on how grief is portrayed because it is so unique to the individual and the experience. I like how we are able to see how it affects the cast in various ways and manifests in different ways. Some people have it all on their face and others keep it buried inside.

As a romance, this is definitely a slow burn with an enemies-to-friends-lovers type set up. As we get to the romance, all the things hinted and unsaid gets dumped on us all at once. We basically have back-to-back-to-back one-on-one confrontations with the two main characters and other members of the cast to “clear the air.” It feels like a lot and I kind of wish it was spread out more.

Overall, it made my heart hurt in a good way (rounded to 4 on GR)
