I personally couldn’t get past the tone of the book, it sounds weird trying to explain it but I just felt like the pacing was really slow and there “wasn’t a lot going on” in terms of character interaction, and I felt like the two main characters would never interact. I guess for me it just wasn’t the right time to read a slower paced book.

noura, thank you. my beloved noura recommended this book to me and i'm very very happy i read it. i'm kind of in a reading slump and i finished this book in one sitting so that is something !!! it was a heavy read. i had tears in my eyes in the end and would have sobbed had i not been sitting in the living room with my family. this book is so teenager ?? but like in the best way. it truly felt like a teen story and i felt like a child again. it was grief. so much grief. and while i might not understand, i also understand so well. the -0.25 stars was because it was a bit hard to understand who is who in the book like who is what character, and that might be on me for not having read for a while and having brain farts. i would have probably given it a 5 stars but i am trying to be a bit critical which i feel so bad for because this was truly such a wonderful wonderful read. a wonderful reminder that just because someone's pain doesn't look the same doesn't make it any less valid. i've learned this lesson growing up, but great to read it again. ah i just loved this book <3

Just need to mention a couple quotes before I get into this review.

“I am disappointing her. She loves me. They coexist.”

“…., he had doctors and a whole support system. I think—I didn’t understand it, but Bryce probably needed that too,” she says, voice cracking. “Maybe so do you.”

I am crying in the middle of the night after finishing this extraordinary book and I need Racquel Marie to pay for her crimes because…oh to write about grief this beautifully, im envious but also so grateful that someone could describe its complexities without villianifying anyone.

these are characters who had to grow up first because of grief, loss, and a bigger grief of missing people you never personally knew but their spirits precedes them. i could see someone people looking at bea and santi’s characters as bad friends, but these are humans, who both lost a best friend, nearly lost each other, and self destruction has always been their coping mechanism, only for it to intensify after bryce’s death. every time they would make a choice that would hurt themselves and others, my heart ached because no one talks about how grief leaves this hole in your chest where you have to blame yourself for not loving enough or showing up enough. racquel showcased it from beginning to end, not asking grace from readers, but seeing yourself in them.

as someone who has experienced loss, i saw a lot of myself in each characters, especially whitney, who was an amazing side character that shined like a main character. she showed grieving isn’t always so outward and sad, it can be hiding under smiles and crowded spaces. it shows forgiveness—who gives it and who doesn’t accept—and it shows broken bonds and reasoning.

i love everything about this book and i’m going to need to buy it because i need this in my home

I didn't really love the characters and I didn't have motivation to read it whenever I looked at the book. Just wasn't my thing I guess.
