So dumb, bruh.
Main character, Maren, is completely unlikeable and annoying.
She spends the whole time pitying herself and calling herself a monster, it becomes very tiring very early. Her, as a character, feels painfully 2015 in a way that i cannot fully describe. I believe that, for me, it comes from the fact that DeAngelis wants us to see Maren as this very big reader, but it was just a little annoying because i don't think she actually reads at any point, she just carries her books around and "casually" references them throughout the story, this feels very 2015 litterature to me, i can't explain it.
Also, at some point she thinks about painting her room TEAL! Can't get any more 2015 than this.
All of the deaths feel so irrelevant.
There is a build-up on the suspense right before Maren does the bad thing, the "sexual" aspect of the eatings is introduced early in the story — making the parallel between Maren and the sexual-cannibalist black widow. By far the most interesting parts are the descriptions of the encounters Maren has with the people she ends up eating, describing them almost like a sexual compulsion (even if she is a minor) — however, there is no explanation when it comes to what actually happens. You never get to experience the pain and disgust that Maren talks about and feels throughout the whole book. You feel no real sympathy for the eaten.
Even Lee's death, which you would think is a very big deal, feels so anticlimatic.
You expect it completely, there is no description of the action, and right after she eats him, she just talks, in a very mundane way, about how he isn't there anymore (I know she says it brings her peace but still).
You feel nothing for them.
There is a weird amount of brand-dropping throughout the book.
I understand the author wants to describe the environments where Maren finds herself, but i see no importance in a metaphor where a Walmart is it's own world, as well as saying that Maren eats specifically Count Chocula cereal.
I just felt like a lot of the story could've been more developped, more interesting, and less annoying.
