I'm DNFing this one. It's not for me. Historical/natural fiction, based on a true story and VERY full of nonfiction nature detail. I read a summary of the actual story after reading to page 65. The people are so mean to Benjamin that the people chapters are painful, and the nature chapters are so, so dense. One review I read said this was not initially intended to be for children, and it makes sense to me that this would be aimed at adults.

Spare prose, well done, I think. Maybe worth 3.5 or 4, to be fair. I'm undecided.

It's funny... I didn't read this genre when I was younger; I read the animal story versions.

BTW I like badgers. American badgers, like this one.

I read the book at about the age of 13, and I wouldn't recommend it for kids under 12 unless they have a more advanced vocabulary. It did leave a lasting impression, to be sure. I enjoyed things about the wilderness, animals, and survival. The base relationships in it both fascinated and uplifted me. The ending was even satisfying, which isn't something I could say about many of the required reading books. Although, I do sympathize with those who were -forced- to read this or any book. I just happened to find it when I was bored.

I don't really think it's fair of those giving this book poor marks for being a good book, but a reading requirement for perhaps slightly too young of an age. There's no more excessive or graphic detail depicted here than one would get from a nature show, and the human factor of it is quite gratifying.

I read this book when I was quite young, and this haunting story stays with me to this day. Gruesome and disturbing at some parts, this book is a must read.

This is my FAVORITE book of all time! This is the very first novel I remember reading cover to cover a book that I could probably pick up today and re-read! Wonderful!!!!

I really enjoyed this book and at first, I didn't think I was going to like it. Historical Fiction has never been a favorite genre of mine but this story deals with the theme of loss, independence, and individuality so well. This book had surprisingly graphic and raw moments. It isn't anything that students or parents should be concerned for but are quite powerful and sometimes a bit gross. The book is incredibly well written and the use of language and vocabulary to describe emotions and actions is beautiful.

I’d give the last quarter of the book 4 stars, but I barely made it to the action because the first parts nearly put me to sleep! I eventually enjoyed the writing, though. I can see why it won a Newbery Honor. Not my favorite, but I’m glad I read it! I just loved the badger and her relationship with Ben!
