I work in an elementary school library and came across this book in my second year there. It had never been checked out by me to any student. Seeing it was a Newbery Honor, I read it. What an amazing story! When I recommend it to students, the description I give sounds ludicrous, but when read it is completely believeable (based in some part on a true story). The main characters, a lost mute boy and a female badger, forge a bond, each unwittingly providing what the other needs. The fact that they form a relationship without the use of words is striking. One of the most beautiful stories of tolerance, sacrifice, acceptance and love I have read---juvenile or adult fiction.

First re-read of this since I was a kid. I loved it with my whole heart then, and was relieved to find that I still love it.

This story, allegedly based on a true incident, is about a boy who lives with a badger for a period of time. The natural history details are glorious- everything you ever wanted to know about badgers, their habits, their diets, and their vocalizations! The story itself is good, though a touch on the melodramatic side.

Recommended for natural history people and animal lovers with a high tolerance for exhaustively detailed descriptions of the omnivorous badger's diet (which included lots of cute furry things).

I was just reminded of this book which I read at some point during elementary school. My memory is that I enjoyed it, but I was 9-11 years old at the time, so I'll leave it unrated.
