It took me a while to get into this novel. However once I got a third of the way I couldn't put it down. This is the sixth in a series but the first i read.

Clifton was training to be a spy when he met Lucy. His instructors daughter. They fall in love, and he promises to come back for her. 7 years later she is now a widow living a dowager house with a little boy (whom we assume is her bastard son)

want to know how it ends?

the little boy is Malcolm and Mariana's son (Lucy and Clifton's siblings respectively)
Lucy's late husband arranged it that Lucy would be without a home, forcing her consider his proposal of marriage
It also turns out that Lucy's and Cliftons Solicitor was a asshole who was skimming off the top for years.

The novel was a little clunkily constructed so following the romance was a little hard. I didn't love the pouty hero

Loved it! Gilby and Goosie aka Clifton and Lucy were awesome characters who were totally meant to be!
