Wow does this go off the rails around chapter 25. The first 2/3rds are pretty great. Not deep, but fun. Adventurous. Kicking ass in space. There were flaws, certainly some characterization that could have been better fleshed out. Ham? Is just here now? Like, permanently? Okay, I guess we’ll just go with it. Murdoch and Fitz don’t hate each other anymore? Well, that was easy but good for them. Murdoch is a brilliant hacker who is so special the Justice has to have her? Okay. I’ll take your word for it. Still, I liked the premise, liked Murdoch and Fitz (and Ham) and even the Justice and I was really enjoying the story until Murdoch suddenly changes course. It’s inexplicable, unexpected in a bad way, completely contrary to what she is thinking and doing up to that point. Even if her choice had been narratively justified, the story arc completely sapped the life and any vestiges of sense out of the story. It was almost like part of a different story with a different Murdoch, and a different cast of characters was dropped into the middle of this one with a sentence or two to smooth over the transition. Except this cast of characters is paper thin, there was no believable reason for anything they or Murdoch did. No justification for any closeness or faith between them and it did super matter anyway because before the end we switch abruptly back to plot a. We’ve forgotten than Hark has been manipulative, short sighted, and cruel and are super excited to get the best band in the galaxy back together even though we actually have been given no reason to be invested in Hark, Bea, or the band as something that should be re-united. Then we handwave away the evil ai overlord, think about how much we love Hark after all, snatch up Ham (our new best friend!), shrug off the mass deaths we’ve caused, and… that’s it. The end.
