Like all books about the Holocaust, this one is shattering, but so hard to put down. I appreciate the narrative coming directly from Minka herself, but I also really liked that the storyline was written to incorporate the life of a descendant of a survivor and how the stories of our ancestors shape us.

I could not put this one down.

Definitely a page-turner, but I thought the small twist at the end did a disservice to the book's otherwise compelling questions about morality.

The character switching for each chapter just got out of hand. I like the style in most cases, but I just got bored

This book was heart wrenching. My father is Jewish and this book had me sobbing multiple times. I thought it was a wonderful concept, however I don’t know if I loved thinking about forgiveness when it comes to Nazis and the Holocaust. I think there were a lot of other premises you could come up with if you wanted to write a book about forgiveness. With that being said, I did think the writing was great and will be looking to pick up more of her books in the future

This is my eighth Jodi Picoult book and I dare to say that this is her best one. The queen of ethical dilemmas shows us yet another touching and heartbreaking story where the message is (once again) that there's more to a story than a one-sided bias.

Warning: Once you start this book, it won't let you go. Even after you've read it. I've rarely read such an intense book. I wanted to keep reading, but sometimes I just had to put it down because it was so intense and emotional (especially Minka's part, which would be an impressive book on its own). This book can certainly be mentioned in the same breath as The book thief by Markus Zusak (also an incredible world war II story about a young woman). The middle part of this book would easily get 5 stars from me, which made the rest of the story a bit less relevant and I was kind of disappointed to see the story return to the present time after that middle part. 4 stars for now for this unforgettable book.
