This book captured me in the first chapter. A strong headed female character that is a baker struggling with secular faith that befriends an elderly man - sign me up!

As it is common for me - female narrator, historical fiction (WWII).

I started looking at perspectives I never thought were possible when reading this novel. A good writer will force you to evaluate both sides of a conflict - JP always does a great job with this as her novels generally have a controversial topic in which the reader usually feels one way or the other, but then she presents they gray area in which the reader starts to see both sides of the story and eventually becomes more open minded about a controversial issue.

The controversial issue in this case is life and death and part of it is set during WWII in a Nazi concentration camp. Remember what I said about JP being great at in her craft? Seeing both sides of the story. It's insane, but she does it.

A very difficult read because of the subject matter, but very well written.

A story within a story. An old SS Nazi officer who asks a favor from a young Jewish woman who's grandmother was a death camp survivor. Never boring but not a fast paced thriller. Ms. Picoult writes a strrong tale, examining feelings and actions of people from the old world and today and how little things change. It's about what makes us human, how men can become monsters, guilt, retribution, penance and much more. Not a lightweight book by any means. I found it both depressing and uplifting. This is my first book by this author. I think she is worth delving deeper into her works. Four and a half stars even though I'm forced to lean toward 4 rather than the full 5. This did have an ending I did not expect.
