Deep in the Kentucky wilderness, four climbers head off in the search of a new and elusive mountain range to scope out fame and recognition in the climbing community. Months later, all that's left is their remains. What happened to Dylan and her friends in that wilderness? Was it cannibalism, exposure to the elements, an accident? Or perhaps it was something more sinister altogether...
I thought that This Wretched Valley got off to a really great and engaging start as the book opens with the discovery of all the bodies of those who ventured into the wilderness on the search of an undiscovered mountain range. Already piqued by the mystery on the blurb and a fantastic opening chapter I had such high expectations for this book, so it's a shame that the contents felt unstructured, flimsy, and held together by a cast of weak characters who had no depth.
There's a lot of walking around in circles in this book, both literally and metaphorically with characters repeating the same actions over and over again with little fruition. This in turn makes the book feel aimless and lacking substance. The plot line that does appear isn't very well embedded, and I found myself confused as to what the real enemy was by the end of the novel. I think the writing style was fine, but there are some strange descriptors in here, and far too many characters 'vomiting' on almost every other page. In short, the cover is beautiful and the gore is indeed gory, but This Wretched Valley is let down by a lacking plot, weak characters, and general absence of any explanation in the ending. It's clear to see that the book is shaped around the gore, not around the plot.
