I liked some of it although I really wanted to love all of it. The plane was flying there and then it wasn't. It crashed somewhere in the mountains of vaguely reflective and mildly boring.

Despairing and depressing, brimming with unlikeable characters - the good stuff! Though I did struggle the same as I did with Robayo’s Holiday Heart, it sometimes get overwhelming being in the heads of her protagonists as they’re almost always grim.
Graphic: Sexual assault, Rape, Religious bigotry, Sexual violence, Violence, Terminal illness, and Child death

Fish Soup is worth the price of admission for the final novella "sexual education", alone. This piece is a searing, powerful, all-too-relatable take on the hypocrasies of catholicism for anyone who has been anywhere near the faith. Unfortunately, I found the rest of the collection to be more or less forgettable (although the tilte story was at least an interesting little work of surrealism).

Ottessa Moshfegh meet your match! Margarita Garica Robayo's protagonists scale all different social ladders in their own (not always likable) way. The stories in Fish Soup have left their mark and I can only hope this is not the only work of hers that will be translated in to English. Thank you to Charco Press for the books! Welcome to the US market you beautiful books!
