The best volume and the characters were really interesting. American Vampire has a habit of being too dark sometimes, but this had just enough humor and dark story.

Another great addition to the American Vampire story. There are three story arcs in this volume. The first, The Beast in the Cave, tells an early story of Skinner Sweet and Jim Book and their relationship prior to Sweet's turn to a life of crime. It also tells gives us a glimpse at the original American Vampire. The art by Jordi Bernet was good. It definitely had an old school feel to it.

The next arc was by far my favorite. "Death Race" brings Rafael Albuquerque back to the art. Here is the story of Travis Kidd in the 1950s. He has the look and attitude of James Dean but with a purpose....to kill vampires. And, of course, what would a American Vampire story be without Skinner Sweet. We also learn Travis's background and how his parents were killed by vampires in Las Vegas (see volume 2 for the story). He has made it his mission to find and kill Sweet, along with some other vampires along the way.

"The Nocturnes" rounds out the story in this volume. Calvin Poole, who we met during the World War II arc, is in Alabama in 1954. He runs into a group of veterans, the Fighting Canines, who turn out to be a variant species of werewolf. Calvin takes it upon himself to rid the town of the werewolves who are holding the town hostage.

Overall, I enjoyed the stories collected in the volume. Scott Snyder continues to put together great stories and gives us more of a history to the world he has created. Rafael Albuquerque's art continues to be incredible, and was definitely my favorite of the artist featured in this volume.

Moving on to volume 5...

This series continues to intrigue and surprise me in interesting ways. The emotional moments don't always land the way I think Snyder wants them to, but even without that, this is an engaging and exciting read. Bring on volume 5!

An excellent way to start 2013. Though I wish each of these stories had a longer arc, they were all deeply meaningful and felt like key pieces in upcoming AV mythology. Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque show no sign of slowing down.

A great follow up on Volume 3, first a flashback then maybe ten years after the events of volume 3. It introduced a new player/character, and so many questions that will be answered in the next Volume.

Scott Snyder continued his well crafted series and I hope the next volume delivers.

Take a step back in time to World War 2. There is an untold part about this time in history. Yes it includes vampires. War changes people. Does it also change Vampires? We also delve even further back when cowboys and Indians rules the open plains. Skinner Sweet and his brother have to decide to follow the rules and die by them or live without structure and live recklessly. Meanwhile there’s a new Vampire hunter on the scene. He’s young with a cause that attracts danger, but saves America one killed Vampire at a time.
