Wow, wow, wow, absolut fantastisches Werk. Ich frage mich wie es sein kann, dass ich es jetzt erst gelesen habe, obwohl ich eigentlich Fan von „Klassikern“, auch der moderneren Art, bin. Es ist wirklich ein absolutes Meisterwerk, welches tiefgründig Feminismus und Nihilismus miteinander verbindet.
Plaths Schreibstil ist fesselnd, klar und zugleich poetisch – man spürt jede Emotion der Protagonistin. Die Charakterentwicklung ist beeindruckend, besonders die Darstellung von Esthers inneren Kämpfen. 
Sie zeigt auf heftige Weise, wie Frauen in einer patriarchalen Gesellschaft unterdrückt werden und wie diese Erwartungen Esther langsam erdrücken. Ihr Nihilismus verleiht der Geschichte eine solche Ehrlichkeit, das Leben kann leer und bedeutungslos wirken, wenn man in solch festgefahrenen Rollen steckt.
Kritiken, die das Buch als zu deprimierend abtun, verstehe ich nicht. Gerade diese brutale Ehrlichkeit macht es so stark. Ein fantastisches Werk, das jede*r lesen sollte.
