Genre: Horror + Mystery Thriller
I have read the author's “Foe” and “We Spread,” and I loved them a lot. So, I was really eager to get into this one. This is a psychological thriller that follows a young couple: a girlfriend and her boyfriend. The girlfriend has been trying to break her relationship with her boyfriend, Jake. Her desire intensifies when the two decide to go on a road trip to visit Jake’s parents.
As soon as the couple steps foot on the remote farm that Jake's parents own, strange occurrences begin to take place, and the parents' behavior also begins to become quite peculiar. Not only for the characters but also for us as readers, it becomes extremely challenging to differentiate between what is real and what is merely a product of imagination.
Regarding this book, I am at a loss for appropriate words! I’m in the middle of the road. I did not find it to be unpleasant, but I also did not find it to be particularly appealing. In my opinion, this is far too confusing for me. Possibly, I need to reread it at a later time in order to determine whether or not I experience any change. I’m genuinely conflicted with my thoughts.
I thought I’d love it, just like the previous books I read by the author. I enjoy reading strange stories, but the degree of confusion in this story was a bit overwhelming. However, there is one thing I must say about the story, and that is that it has a very atmospheric quality.

Great tension building, but the ending took me out of it...
