Finance and corporate affairs are generally esoteric, but this book reads like a thriller. The rules were simple: never pay in cash, never tell the truth, and never play by the rules.
I judge a book by it's educational value, the drama in Barbarians at the Gate is seasoned with a valiant explanation of various concepts in finance such as toehold investments, defensive capitalisation, fiduciary duties of directors, poison pills and LBOs. The books strips the dread out of the esoteric topic of finance.
Overrall, the book exposes the fallibility of humans, the excesses of Wall Street, and the lack of caution when using other people's money. One of the greatest business books ever written

This is certainly a fascinating story and a masterfully written book. I also think there are valuable lessons in here for anyone who ever wants to do business negotiations. But I’ll be honest - there’s an upper limit to how much time I’m willing to spend reading about Wall Street backstabbing, and I’m afraid this book overshot that limit by about 300 pages (let’s never talk about how long it took me to finish this).
