This was billed as a family drama, and it does follow four siblings, but also has chapters devoted to 5 different side characters with some background and explanation of current motivations. Everyone is at least a little bit loathsome, which isn't a dealbreaker for me, but the pace is so breezy that no one really gets a thorough examination. In the end, I was left a little befuddled about what the author was trying to get across.

I'm not a huge lover of the 'book club' genera of books, but I really enjoyed this fictional glimpse (without a glimmer of fantasy/scifi) into the life of a family in NYC. Well written and interesting.

Quick review: Interesting story...the characters weren't horrible but were very unlikeable. I enjoyed having different characters' points of view. I found myself more interested in the lives of the minor characters (the twin high school girls). Well-written and interesting, not a lot of excitement or things to reflect upon.

Very “Gossip Girl”-esque and gives off old money vibes. Definitely is not what I expected though.

It was impossible for me to see how this became a New York Times Bestseller. It was mediocre. It just never went anywhere interesting. I almost stopped reading it a third of the way in and honestly I should have. I just don’t understand the people who love this book. The characters were uninteresting. It was hard to care about anyone. So glad to put this down and start something else.

Smart, current storytelling most definitely inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but that’s fine bc who doesn’t like F. Scott Fitzgerald?! All the characters are an interesting mix of hateable and loveable. I’ll definitely read more by her.
