Brilliant! Simple and evocative, this is a story of two girls who meet in a refugee camp, tell their story and then separate. I read it to my 5th graders and let them type comments as I went. It was amazing how little kids know about what is going on in the world. Many just didn't 'get it'. "Why doesn't she have any shoes?" was asked by many of my students - inner-city kids who know what poverty is, but haven't heard the term 'refugee camp' before. It was a great book for starting conversations.

A sweet but sad book about two girls who become friends and share what little they have with one another. I think this book provides an interesting look at the refugee experience for young readers, though they may not understand what’s going on.

“20 million refugees in the world”
We must share stories with our children so they have compassion for those fleeing.

Four Feet, Two Sandals is a story that takes place in a refugee camp. It is about two girls whom harbor a friendship because they notice they are each wearing a sandal from a matching pair. Lina and Feroza decide come up with a solution: they will take turns wearing the sandals. They then started to do everything in their daily life together. When one is to leave for America, they are unsure of what to do with the sandals. Again, they are left with four feet and two sandals.
This story is a beautiful story about a friendship that is harbored in a very difficult time at a very difficult place. It is important for students to see that everyone needs a friend.

This is the story of two Afghan girls who each discover one sandal in the same pair and decide to share them. The text and illustrations are incredibly simple, yet moving.

In a refugee camp in Pakistan, where there is so little to posses, two girls share one pair of sandals and a lifelong friendship.
