Is it bad I wanted her to end up with Jake...

I would’ve dnf’d but decided to be an informed hater

Found myself defending this book to anyone I told about it, definitely a huge spicy rating from me but it was written so well I could get past all of the slight ickyness lol, was sort of easy to foreshadow the ending unfortunately

I'm sure for some people it's the pseudoincest that makes them rate this poorly. But trust me, it's the story. The story is just ... bland. An attempt was surely made for this to be *taboo* and *exciting*, but none of them are actually related (so whatever??), the decision of which guy she ends up with is so arbitrary and silly, and the "spice" is (with one exception) mostly just missionary-position rape. Not worth that hype.

I’m still trying to parse my feelings about this book. I think I have come to the conclusion that “age gap” is just not a trope I’m down for. I’ve seen this book raved about in so many of my FB book groups that I figured I’d finally break down and read it. I think 22-25 year old me would have enjoyed this book more than 36 year old me did. I suppose with age comes perspective. The whole “waiting till she was of age” by a grown ass 40+ year old man was just very much grooming and icky. While I understand the escapism of dark romance like Haunting Adeline, this was different. This felt like the glorification of domestic abuse. Kaleb abused her, and gaslit her and emotionally/mentally tortured her and she just ate it up.

I wish they weren’t a family to begin with..
