I appreciate Simpson’s dedication to the style of fables. The use of straightforward language and repetition of baseline scenarios  queues readers up for the morals delivered over the course of the story. I found the language accessible for both adults and children. Topics of both practical and philosophical senses were discussed.

The illustrations were also charming and added further character to the book.

I recognized some of the foreign words used as names (Nett and Aquila stood out) and learned some new ones. There was a sense of there being a world outside of what was covered in the context of this story. I’m looking forward to reading the other fables in the series, particularly The Mermaid and the River Otter.
