There were some interesting parts but overall I didn't like it as much as the first book.

Non-spoiler: A bit of sagging-middle syndrome, but definitely a worthy addition to the series. The marriage plot was dropped fast (thank goodness), but the plotpoints in general were not as compelling as before.

Spoiler: The romance, which was very, very minor in Book One, was the main plot... for a third of it. It got dropped like a rock for a decent assassination plot, and a whole lot of subplots. Almost all of then were forgettable. That's actually a great way to sum up this book: forgettable. With all of the plot threads, I only ended up remembering a few. It does progress the story however, and I do reccomend not skipping it in the series. The Kaiser's death was epic, however.

Verdict: Read it if you liked the first book. However, expect not to remember much of it
