I've read this book a few times before, but this is the first time reading it to my sons who just turned five a month ago. It's our first attempt at a bedtime story without pictures. They lie back and listen to the words with their eyes closed. So far...so good and we're on page 8 of 106. I hope they love it as much as I do.

It amazes me how much they understand. I read it word for word - not knowing myself what is meant by some of the English phrasing, and yet the boys talk about Roverandom later and seem to understand the story perfectly. "Remember the spiders on the moon, mommy?" One says, "The white ones bring good dreams, the black ones are scary." The other thinks they are all scary and bring bad dreams...and a literary discussion ensues between my five year olds. Awesome!
One more reason I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Poor Roverandom!
Tolkien's word play is on point in this quick, light-hearted read about a dog on an otherworldly and sometimes cosmic adventure. Rover is a troublemaker and gets himself and his friends along the way into some serious mischief. Tones of accepting others differences, the importance of patience, and accepting responsibility for your actions.

Moon spiders, sand magicians, grumpy sea serpents, and a puppy cursed by an ornery wizard.
This is such a sweet children's story, it made me feel cozy and warm. I fell in love with Tolkien's clever prose and beautiful imagination all over again.
Also, Derek Jacobi's narration for the audiobook version is so wonderful.

This was a cute little story about a dog's run in with wizards! I loved all the fun silly adventures Roverandom had on the moon and under the sea, just showing how amazing of an imagination Tolkien had!
I do love these two quotes from The Man in the Moon and the mermaid Mrs Artaxerxes:
"Now fly off and amuse yourselg. Don't worry the moonbeams, and don't kill my white rabbits, and come home when you are hungry!"
"Now swim away and amuse yourselves! Don't worry the fire-fish, don't chew the sea-anemones, don't get caught in the clams; and come back to supper!"

Tolkien wrote it. It’s written well. It’s a children’s book about a dogs adventures. Adorable.

Had to read this for a presentation, which I'm doing this week. As much as it shames me to admit, this was my very first J.R.R.Tolkien book. Obviously I know The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies, I'm in love with them, and I will hopefully read the books soon. I am thinking about writing an essay on The Hobbit.
Roverandom is a quick entertaining read, it is not, however, very memorable. I think the story behind this book is way more interesting, if I'm allowed so to say. This book is actually inspired on something that happened to Tolkien. He gave one of his son a toy dog, who then lost it at the sea shore and never saw it again. To appease his son Tolkien decided to tell his son about Rover, the name of the toy dog, and his adventures.

I read this story only because it was written by Tolkien. It was boring in parts (mostly because they felt silly) but overall it was an interesting story for small children about a dog which gets turned into a toy by a wizard. I am sure I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read this story when I was a kid. So happy to have finally read something from Tolkien other than his middle earth stories.

I remember buying this in the beginning of my 9th grade. I forget about it and as years had passed and always araging my books I always said "I am gonna read it!" and didn't do it "it's a short book!" but is never too late to see a dream come true. (A dream is more powerful than a thousand realities!)
I did unfortunately bought it in my native language (Romanian) but luckily it was translated and had notes from English version in English sometimes!
A well-known introduced in Tolkien's world will observe a lot of the leitmotifs of his writing, still it is a very fastinating way of how he transform the real world into this creation. He still inspire me to write against all the odds of not having any idea for a new poetry, but when I read his lovely and kind descriptions and his humour, I start working on my ideas! Some are good some are not, but with all my heart read this for your children and for yourself.
As a psychology student I am amazed by his imagination and the way of seeing world and make writing a place with no restrictions, because nowdays I think it is a censore between the one who creates and the one that receive the creation, 'simplicity and your own way' a subtle suggestion of his work is the best!
I digress! Back to the story, my favourite?! Moon landing world is amazing! It felt for me like a home, like a proper one! The sea one actually made me very uncomfortable especially because creatures where mad for one reason or another (but that's just my opinion). I liked the-man-from-the-moon (is that a proper translation?!) and the-sea-dog a lot.
I am stoping with the spoilers! I don't like giving spoilers, there's a lot to say about this little story and deserves a place in your reading list.
