Freeman' book "preaches to the choir" effectively, but I would have appreciated more connection building and less fragmented language.

Um livro provocador e inspirador, que nos faz pensar no que andamos aqui a fazer hoje em dia. Ou, até diria, o que NÃO andamos aqui a fazer hoje em dia.
As palavras têm poder.

This is a great read. I taught it to my undergraduates in a Hip Hop literature course and they ate it up. Because like hip hop, this book looks at language and provokes activism and self-reflection, and seeks to redefine how we use language.

In Dictionary of the Undoing, Freeman takes the mundane and creatively engages the reader to think about how they use language in the context that so much of our language is weaponized and used against us. I think if you are a person who believes there is no point in hoping for change then perhaps this book will fall on deaf ears, but as a teacher, and someone who knows and understands the impact of responsible citizenship, and who practices responsible citizenship (in a global context) this book is a great place to start.

Dictionary of the Undoing should be taught in both high school and college because responsible citizenship is a path to redemption from the historical evils of mankind and the current corporate and government atrocities that plague our planet. If you are not ready to look at yourself in the mirror then this book will make you uncomfortable and you'll probably blame the book.

A cry for active participation in rebuilding community and the public sphere in our current times. Overall, he did a mighty fine job with the constraint of finding something to write about for each letter of the alphabet, but a few of the entries did seem a bit forced.

A is for “agitate,” Z is for “zygote,” and “hope is the thunderstorm before the rain of change.” To fill in the gaps, read Dictionary of the Undoing by John Freeman and participate in building a “lexicon of engagement.”
