A great book for confronting White Feminism in yourself if you've never done that before, and a good reminder for those of us that have already been trying to confront these things.

We rarely talk about basic needs as a feminist issue. Food insecurity and access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. Instead of a framework that focuses on helping women get basic needs met, all too often the focus is not on survival but on increasing privilege. 

This novel is so immeasurably important, not only because it offers a much needed re-framing of mainstream feminism, but because it is an absolute wake-up call for all white upper/middle class women who call themselves feminists -- myself included. 

My main takeaway was the need for us cis white women to learn how to listen and exclude ourselves from the narrative where necessary. Kendall's anecdotes were powerful and compelling, and I was repeatedly forced to sit with and analyse my discomfort.  

I've docked some points because of a couple minor issues: this novel is a bit repetitive at times and perhaps works best as an introduction to intersectional feminism. Still such a worthwhile read, and much more compelling than Allende's feminist memoir... 

Privilege not only blinds you to oppression, it blinds you to your own ignorance even when you notice the oppression.

I loved listening to Mikki Kendall narrating this audiobook. This is a fresh reminder that acknowledged so much of the cognitive dissonance I experience on a daily basis as a BIPOC. We live in a country that refuses to come to terms with historical wrongs that must be addressed before we can head toward future rights together. I really needed to hear Kendall's reminders that feminism looks different when you are surviving vs. living with privilege. I found myself agreeing out loud with the universal truths Kendall drops page after page of this powerful, modern, and holistic collection of feminist ideas that we need for collective liberation.

have lots of thoughts regarding this book that i will need to parse through, but for the most part i enjoyed it! unsure of how much i actually learned but it did leave me with good questions like "how can i continue the practice of being an accomplice feminist?" and also "how can i take all the things i do learn in the books i read about feminism, politics, etc. and apply it to my communities? what actionable items can i take?"

I put most content warnings under “graphic” but I’m not sure how to categorize them. It’s not graphic in the sense of detailed descriptions of specific occurrences of each topic necessarily, but there are extensive discussions about these topics as a whole. Also, the chapters are fairly independent so not all CWs appear in all or even many chapters.
