"The Trophy Wife" by Valerie Keogh is a gripping psychological thriller that follows the story of Jake Mitchell, a man determined to break free from the monotonous life his parents led. This fast-paced novel explores the destructive power of lies and envy.
Although the book is written in the first person, which is not my preferred point of view, I still found myself captivated by the story. Personally, I associate words like "I" and "me" with myself, so I usually prefer books written in the third person. However, in the case of "The Trophy Wife," I was able to overlook my preference due to the protagonist being male and my being female. I had the opportunity to read this book for free through the Prime reading service on Amazon.
Overall, I rate "The Trophy Wife" a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

Rating 2.5. I was under the impression that I would hear more from the female protagonist. But this was all the males perspective. And the ending was crazy and not in a good way.

I enjoyed this engaging, dramatic psychological thriller with a plot full of unexpected turns. The writing style by this author keeps the reader invested, but the main characters are a bit like marmite; you are either going to love or hate them, and there is no in-between.
If you have read anything by Keogh before, you will know how storylines always flow well, and the smoothness of everything makes for an entertaining read. The Trophy Wife is not any different.
Despite this, the conclusion left me deflated. There is massive potential for a jaw-dropping ending, but it didn't happen, leaving me feeling a little cheated. This is the only reason why this isn't a five-star read.
Regardless of the flaws, this is a highly stimulating read and would make an ideal introduction to this author or this genre.
Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for a gifted pre-release copy of this book.

The book started off slowly, with not much interesting things happening to keep me engaged. However, the second half completely drew me in, and I found myself really enjoying it! Initially, I was rooting for the main character, but as the story progressed, he became unlikeable and annoying. Despite this, I remained intrigued by his actions and curious to see what would happen next. I particularly liked the way the book ended!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up. I wouldn't say this was a psychological thriller. It's more of a slow-burn domestic fiction. I found not a lot happened for a while. Then when Jake meets Joyce, things start to change, and the meeting in Bristol, things become much clearer to me. I could see what was beginning to happen to Jake and to be honest, my heart was broken.
I do love a book by Valerie, and this book was something different. It had a completely different feel to it. Different doesn't equate to bad, just different, which is why I don't think it was a psychological thriller.
I want to know more about Joyce, especially after that ending!!!! I am worried things might have gone a lot more south, and I pray for things to be different for Jake,
I found the book intriguing enough to keep going. There was something about Jake, and his purpose, wanting to be better, to have better and to be "above his station." Ann was a horrific character, but knowing what I know now...I'm not sure that was a fact. I have a feeling that our viewpoints might have been played with - which is very clever indeed. We will never know, if Ann was as toxic as we were led to believe or if this was conjured as an excuse for behaviour.
Cleverly done, even though I am still sitting here worried about one of the characters!!!!
