Unusual. Characters make plans for life but life insists on making the plans itself.
I was emotionally sucked in to the climactic moment. It really worked well and could have gone either way. Spare writing but just right for the place and mood.

I kept wanting to stop, but I couldn't. I'm still trying to figure out why.

As a writer, I appreciate what's being done in this book. As a human being, I still don't know what to think of the ending.

Excellent read about three characters, a teacher and two middle school students in a desolate shithole hick town in Florida. The author completely nails Florida, btw. I loved the prose, which was spare but cut right to the heart of every character. I knew nothing about this book going into it, and I think it's better that way. Highly recommended.

"[He] didn't especially feel like a murderer, but maybe you didn't until you murdered. He had never felt, particularly, like a non-murderer. Someone had to commit all these murders that were always being committed. Why not him? Why couldn't his be the story of a killer?"

Brandon's writing saved this from being a three or even a two star review because, honestly, not much really happened. He was kind of treading water til the payoff at the end. Probably should have been a novella instead.
Maybe it's because its what i was listening to at the time, but if you take a listen to Zola Jesus' 'I Can't Stand' that helps kinda sum up this book.
