I'm putting this on the 'read in high school' shelf, but unlike most of the others I put on there, this wasn't a required reading, I just wanted to see what the fuss was about.

LOVED this book. I don't understand how anyone could not. I fully plan on forcing it upon Falon once she's mastered her fear of chaptered books.

Such a moving book. Love love love.

Wow.
I read this book because I am not all that well read (I have read a lot of what I know I like and not strecthed myself much outside that), and as a result I have joined a Classics for Beginners group on GoodReads. Their September book was this one, and I pretty much read it in a day.
My prior knowledge of the book was that it was about a trial, and to a degree it is certainly the most significant chunk of the book. Although it gets the occasional mention in the first half of the book, it is not really until the second half that you appreciated what is actually going on. And by then, you have fallen for the characters. Even though you have not met Tom Robinson, you know that he is innocent, and you also know what the verdict of the trial is going to be.
You end up with a tremendous respect for Atticus Finch, and indeed his children. The end did come as a suprise, I did not see either of the significant deaths coming, and as such they were both pretty shocking.
The story just flowed from the page, and I found once I was in the second half I was unable to stop until I had reached the end.
I am going to read up on this book now, it was published in 1960 (set in 1935) when many of the attitudes seen in the book would still have been present when it was written.
So, in a nutshell, I am so pleased that I read this and hope anybody who likes a good story and had not read this will treat themselves. I doubt they will be disappointed.

4.5. This is a reread. Still really good. But I’m not 11 and I read Go Set a Watchman, so some of the shine has worn away.
