I'm not an elite runner, will never be an elite runner and in fact have never run more than a mile at one time in my life. But this was incredible and eye-opening about how women are treated as athletes at ALL levels, and how sports and athletics are not structured to support women's participation.

When I wasn’t bawling about everything that Lauren and the other women and girls mentioned in the book had gone through, or my realization that the lens through which I’ve followed female athletics has been horribly skewed by the patriarchy, or even my unwilling contribution to these societal issues during my time growing up in athletics, I was deeply appreciative of the perspectives offered, the solutions proposed, and the raw storytelling the book contained. This will be one I recommend to anyone who will listen, and will be one I buy to put on my shelf because it’s a foundational story intersecting several vital topics I care deeply about. Thanks for putting this out there Lauren; I can feel how it was anything but easy to do.

this book nearly sent me into a reading slump. i will say that the subject material is good and it is highly informative. it kills me that women athletes are not as supported as their male counterparts; however, something about the delivery bored me to tears - it felt like reading a lengthy wikipedia article.
the parts i enjoyed was when the author was connecting with her peers and the scenes with her family. teared up a bit at the end ngl. those were the ones that fully humanised her story, otherwise it would have been too tedious to read.
