I found some stories in this book interesting but there was a page that was a difficult read but I still enjoyed it nevertheless.

I loved these fairytales and found them super entertaining and insightful to Irish/Celtic culture overall. I also especially loved to see how the retellings slightly differed from the ones that I grew up with in my own culture :)

So this is a strange complaint BUT
While I liked the stories chosen for the collection, there was something off-putting about the way the book was set up. this edition has a strange page format and font that hurt to read a bit.
That silly complaint aside, it was a well-chosen set of tales and I was really thrilled with the content (if not the look) of the book.

Ok. I'm a doofus. After noticing the original publish date was in the 1800s I think I know why the format seemed off. Oops

This was an old collection of fairy tales that I had found when I was a kid and it was a pleasure to revisit a collection I had read years ago.

I must have got this book about 12 years ago from a friend - she had been given it as a gift but was not a fan of fairy tales - I was and so this book came to me.

There are perhaps 8 stories in here that I really enjoy, a few others that are enjoyable the rest.. not really a fan of. Overall though this is an enjoyable read even if it is perhaps a bit of a slog to read in one massive go.

This was read, purely as a research aid for my own writing.

This is a solid book of Celtic fairy tales compiled and edited by Joseph Jacobs. Some of the stories are related to bronze-age epics, which means they have more parts in verse, and more named characters than typical fairy tales. Other stories are just what you'd expect in a book of fairy tales.

While probably appropriate for all audiences, most older fairy tale books should be read over once before being shared with children--though I don't think this volume had anything much worse than that guy who married a second wife while looking for his first (and had a kid with her). And many the venomous shoe, if your kids are scared of shoes (I know I find them terrifying). Also, grammar takes a vacation in at least one of the stories.
