Quick, easy read. It's definitely not as amazing as Wicked, but still a really enjoyable sequel.

Liir is a big whiner. I definitely did not enjoy Son of a Witch as much as Wicked. Sometimes, I just wanted Liir to shut up.

Way more compelling than I expected it to be, but the ending was disappointing.

I found this follow up to wicked to be lackluster. I was curious about the life of Elphabas son , but he’s not that interesting. This book is adventurous and he does travel a lot and encounter many people. But I felt like the story went no where.

I wasn't interested in this sequel when I was younger because the main character was a boy, which I find really funny almost 20 years later. Rereading Wicked as an adult was really transformative, so I decided to give the sequel another shot. Glad I did! It's not perfect, but I really like the way Gregory writes.

I found this book to be incredibly personal. Getting the context of what inspired the book was helpful. For one, the book is written after the huge success of the musical, which funnily led to a lot of criticism of the book. The idea of fame and immortality in culture is a strong theme of the sequel. Additionally, one of the author's son joined the military, and that must be a unique feeling as a parent (one who has lived through the height of Vietnam) to navigate. Watching your child become their own person and making choices that confound and scare you. This all during the Iraq war, which seriously divided the US. Images of torture and military violence directly impacted GM's motivation to write the sequel. It's a great lens to take into the book.

The audiobook wasn't my favorite because it does get a little plodding. Which is weird because I love listening to interviews with GM. I think I don't love when authors read their own work, except for memoirs.
