Very good book - not sure I’ve ever disliked a protagonist as much as I dislike Touraine. How many selfish mistakes can you make? It’s left me with zero empathy for her.

I really wanted to like this book but honestly it did feel very debut-esque. The world was not fully developed and I found it quite confusing. Similarly, the characters are supposed to be relateable/you are supposed to root for them but at the end of the day it’s a colonization story and even the “best case” scenario wasn’t rootable for. I also just found Touraine so unbelievably grating as a character. I was thinking it would be lots of spying and espionage but her version of spying is just making dumb decisions without thinking and bouncing back and forth between the groups.

Took me a while to read this because of life but it was SO GOOD! The themes of colonialism and rebellion are so well developed. You can definitely see the parallels between this fictional world and the French occupation of Algeria. I particularly enjoyed the discussion around language and how it feels to lose one's language due to colonisation. The feelings of loss and cultural disconnect as a result of it were masterfully portrayed.
The only thing I didn't particularly enjoy was the romance between Luca and Touraine - it felt underdeveloped and a bit confusing at times. I am however looking forward to see how it unfolds over the next installment.
Overall would highly recommend!
