Anais Nin brings erotic and provocative twists to her gorgeous prose. Quite enjoyable.

only the united beat of sex and heart together can create ecstasy.
this is how you write erotica. this was the first book by anais nin i ever read, but it didn't take me much time to realize this is many many levels above the contemporary erotica that gets the world crazy (i.e. fifty shades of grey, crossfire series, etc.). and i should know. i've read them.
rather than being crude and straightforward, anais nin's writing is accessible, poetic, delicate, beautiful, and (naturally) very sensual. i mean, no matter how much she dials up the sexual volume, it's never distasteful (even with all her obvious weirder fetishes). i never found these short stories to be dirty or depraved, but instead surprising and insightful, having been written by a woman.

Trigger warning: Skip the first story if you are faint-hearted. It features abuse.
If like me, you find it hard to read mainstream erotica or find good erotica to read, this may interest you.
The book is a series of separate instances with some recurring characters, but there isn't necessarily a 'plot' to it. Think of an essay only on the act of sex with several chapters. Some of it is titillating, some even philosophical and some just plain shocking.
For a book on erotica I did find non hetero normative sex inadequately represented. Even the lesbian sex featured in the book comes across as the kind manufactured to 'present' or 'perform' rather than something that occurs naturally. I think this arises from the author's limitations. Similarly the kink featured in the book is fairly repetitive - the obsession of the main character, a woman, with rape, wanting to be rape, desiring violence. After a few times, it makes one wonder if the author's personal preferences and dilemmas have creeped into it. This makes sense too considering some of the 'stories' in the book are diary entries of the author.
Do try if you have ever wondering if erotica can be written well. This one is atleast a good attempt, albeit I could not read it in one sitting.

Verbose porn. Necrophilia, ephebo/pedophilia, incest, beastiality, sadism/torture, molestation, rape/forced sodomy, and totally unrealistic rampant unprotected sex...and somehow, no one ever gets pregnant. A rather disturbing and spiritually deadening read. I'm left feeling bummed out and pretty gross.
I feel it's important to note that I'm not sheltered in the least and my morals can be loose, but this was pushing it even for me. I almost just put it down entirely a few times, but I hate to quit a book, especially a shorter one.
Not what I was expecting to read. I don't know exactly what I WAS expecting to read; I've never read any of Nin's work and this isn't exactly my type of literature. Anyway, it ended up in my possession and I thought I'd give it a go. I guess the title sounded kind of like it might be romantic and feminine. Nope.

I do like Anais Nin's writing style; and this applies to this book too. I'd read reviews of this book so I was pre-warned of the content but was curious enough to go ahead and purchase.
I'm half way through it but am unlikely to keep going. It's just not for me. Some of the short stories I found boring, whilst others had me cringing and trying to eradicate the associated mental picture.
Each to their own.
