So many of these stories are filled too violent. Sexy! But violent. I think it speaks to the time and audience reading the stories. Lurid details abound.
Check those trigger warnings, I wish I could unread some of this. Read for bookclub
this is some seriously filthy shit with a thick helping of white het fuckery (racism & exoticization of every imaginable style + intense fetishization of binary gender), and also i am grateful this exists because slut lineage is hard to trace back this far a lot of the time & there are even dykes in this collection. these stories come from a time anaïs & her circle were writing erotica at a per-page fee, and repeatedly told by the unnamed commissioner to “leave out the poetry” and keep to the ”mechanics” of sex. it’s a bit wild reading this kinda porn from a current era of internet porn & tracing similarities & differences in tropes, schemas, and relationships.
i only read half but i think i deserve to say i read the whole thing cause it was so disturbing and full of incest

Anais Nin was my first foray into "erotica" and she remains my favorite author of the genre. Not just for the stories that she wrote, but for the life that she lived.

Dated, but groundbreaking and generally a good read. Interesting to read it in relation to a culture in which what was scandalous is now almost quaint.
