This book knocked me out it was so good. I wonder if it will ever come back "in style"....they should make a limited series (I think it's just an old movie).

Remarkable book. I am fascinated by this author's style of writing. Just enough conversations, just enough narration. Not too much to get bored, not too little to feel as if there isn't enough of it. The story - so touching. The characters - made out of flaws, just as any person is. I learned so much from this book, got attached to the characters as if they were created by my imagination not the author's, as if they were mine and only mine. By the end, I was clinging to this book, holding on to it as if it was my baby. I was especially fascinated by the story of Cain and Abel, the way the author managed to doom Cal and Aron to the same destiny and yet create them with their own flaws and their own charms. Absolutely amazing. I wish I could read this book for the first time all over again.

This book is one of the best books I have read this year. The way Steinbeck was able to capture loneliness, sorrow, the inner struggle between good and bad, in his characters and writing was impeccable. I found myself attached to some of the characters, I wish I had a friend like Lee and Samuel. This books is more than a retelling of Cain and Abel. It shows how one can self destruct and how vulnerable it makes a person to try to achieve what almost every single person on this Earth wants to achieve: love. How fragile and messy we get when there is a chance that someone could love us, someone can show us affection. It is almost addictive trying your best to get them to do so, and this book reflects that almost too honestly. I love this book, I recommend it so so much!

Just the best Book I‘ve ever read so far. There is so much wisdom and psychology in this book. You feel like the characters in this book are real people because the author manages it to describe them so well. I just feel empty After finishing this book because I don‘t know if I will read anything comparable. In Short I just loved it.
Btw I read it in German and it was still a pleasure. The translation was really good.

It's been a long time since I read a book that felt worthy of study.

I can feel the themes that run through this book, and how it'd reward rereads and analysis. I haven't considered a book like this since school.

Steinbeck has a wonderful way of writing prose, and writing tragic characters, and showing the insecurities and weaknesses that everyone has. These are remarkable characters.

While there aren't world changing events in the book, there are still plenty of powerful turns of fortune and drama, very affecting.

Some parts haven't aged well since it was written, but a lot of female and minority characters have much more depth in them than things written much more recently.

Also, I am 100% team Cathy, get your bread girl!
