This is the kind of book that makes me wish I have a highlighter in my hand, but I read it too voraciously to get up and go get one. I felt so close to Ifemelu by the end that finishing the book felt like moving away from a friend. I wish I could meet up with and talk to her! Adichie is so talented in developing believable characters who each have something to teach us. She packs so many interesting and important observations about Nigerians, Americans, immigration, race, as well as just people's funny and irritating quirks. I learned a lot and never felt lectured (as a white American), I was transfixed by and totally invested in Ifemelu's findings and journey. As a bonus, as someone who is a child of immigrants, I really appreciated Ifemelu's reflections on her cousin's experience as one. Even though I cannot understand the experience of being black in a nearly all-white school/town, I really resonated with his (and other side characters' that come and go at other points in the book) experience of feeling disconnected from his ancestral homeland. I appreciate that Adichie included this perspective.

“I'm chasing you. I'm going to chase you until you give this a chance.”

I feel like this book covers similar topics to Home Fire, and does them better. I found myself relating to the discussions around race and privilege a lot. The writing style is easy to read, and once you get into this book, you really get invested in all the characters and side characters and their journeys through navigating life in America, UK and Nigeria. It's an interesting book.

Even though this book is purely fiction, it can be considered written master class when I comes to the Nigerian American- African American tension. Even though I am not Nigerian I often found myself nodding my head in some of Ifemelus’ American experiences. I even read the scene at the store out loud to some friends because it tickled me so much.

Even though I think I personally enjoyed reading Ifemelus’ perspective. Seeing how the separation was tracked through Obinzes’ eyes was great for context and it made their reunion that much sweeter.

This was a great easy to read comfort from an amazing author.

I'm so glad I have finally finished this thick-ass gigantic masterpiece of a book — once again it reminded me why Adichie was, is, and will be one of my favourite authors. So many important things so creatively and credibly — incredibly — told, and as someone who is neither Black or African or American I learned a lot from reading this. I'd like to give an example quote to convince y'all reading my review to find the courage to grab this book, but honestly I'd have to cite every other sentence (and that alone should convince you :)
Yes, it's thick, serious and emotional, BUT every single page is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY (and I'm craving to read so much more).
