This was incredibly bleak and so well-written. Irina was intensely hateable from the first page, but in a way that was actually believable and enjoyable to read. I liked how Eliza Clark explored some of the reasons that might have caused her to become the disgusting person she was.
I really appreciated the depiction of a toxic friendship dynamic and Flo's cringey blog posts were probably my favourite part of the book.
Will definitely be reading Penance when I can find it in the library

This book is just American Psycho’s sister, British Photographer. I’m not mad about it, but I don’t think that this is any more disturbing or dark than that. The book doesn’t really “go” anywhere, but that’s kind of the point by the end. It feels wrong to call this book “fun” when it has some genuinely distressing content and themes, but frankly, I don’t know if I totally consider this to be a horror novel—if anything, it’s a character study of an incredibly unreliable narrator who’s (possibly? probably?) done some really dark things and had equally horrible things happen to her, and while the stuff is horrific, I personally never felt like my pulse was “racing” in the way one might associate with a psychological thriller. Even so, I mostly enjoyed this book, though it really significantly picks up in the second half.

fav quote: “she liked Harry Styles a few years ago, and now she likes that white-bread, absolutely fucking baguette of a lad from Call Me by Your Name”. This book is p much just unhinged feral woman does unhinged feral things to men that get progessively more unhinged and feral. not sure i got the deeper commentary of it all but it was *interesting* to read ! the tw list gives an indication of the unhingedness at play lmao

Ehhhhhh, I dunno about this one, Sweet Babies. My Storygraph will try to tell you otherwise, but "dark" and "edgy" and "transgressive" books don't often pop my corn. Irina is a late 20s British photographer, and an absolutely abhorrent human being. She's supposed to be, that's not why I didn't like the book much. Sure, it was juicy watching her be evil and blow up her life but her fatphobia and bitchiness got old as I got bored with the plot. It's not a full spoiler to say I've had enough of dark stories with unreliable narrator FMCs. All the trigger warnings and Americans, get your British slang dictionary ready! This book was more tolerable than others of the genre, so I'll give it a 2.5 tater-ratin'. 🥔🥔🍠/🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

Dang yeah this is a tik tok book that lived up to the hype. This book is also a prime example of how to write and deeply flawed and pretty unlikeable main character, but still make them somehow lovable and fun to read about. It actually reminded me a lot of American Psycho, because they both have very unreliable narrators, and it’s kind of ambiguous whether they did certain things.
Like its kind of ambiguous whether they actually killed anyone. And also they both try to tell people about their crimes and no one takes them seriously.
Fr though this story was so interesting, and was kind of like watching a train wreck happen and you can’t look away. Also, flo was actually my favorite character.
Read from the Provo library.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm personally a big fan of stories about terrible people constantly stumbling against one another, and that what this book is. Irina is a complicated person, but she is also an Awful person and the first chapter of this book does a very very good job at situating it and making it clear. It is a very uncomfortable read though, and I would definitely take a look at the content warnings before picking this book up.
Also, and this might be a bit pejorative but I genuinely think it's well executed and a very good take on the ideas and how their adapted to suit this story, but it's like if the movie American Psycho was about a lower middle class English queer woman kink artist.
