loved loved loved. i get that this is a Shocking Statement for the girlies who have no idea how to describe this beyond 'um... female american psycho?' but i loved the main character and identified with her in a lot of ways - we share a very similar background (live in the same place in the UK, even!) and it was almost like looking into a very fucked up alternate dimension in a way. i felt sorry for her and i wanted to succeed and i know that realistically, she can't, and she's doomed to be her mother and to get worse and to rot, but that urge to be SEEN and KNOWN spoke to me so distinctly there was no way i just couldn't love her even despite her terrible cruelty and the things she'd done.

the book WAS wobbly at parts, will probably age poorly for things that are admittedly funny now but will be nigh incoherent to anyone reading this in 20 years time, and the ending is a bit of a dealbreaker for some (not me, and not after the disappointment of our wives under the sea - that WAS a stinker) but ultimately, it crafted a world that i could understand and relate to in so many ways. really special book for me.

this book is crazy and I don't know how to feel about it. I like it but I am kinda confused. but I get what is happening, the main character just has a interesting way of dealing with things.

This is, and I do not say this lightly, the single most terrifying book I've ever read — if only because I caught myself mid-laugh gasping in horror.

Never has a book been able to completely creep me out, and the next line make me chuckle from the blunt British humor that was characteristically so out of touch. Boy Parts is a very dark lampooning of rape culture that is grimly uncomfortable. Irina has a history of being a victim of sexual violence from men in power dynamics, whether it is her teacher or a guy at a party whom gave her drugs and alcohol to the point she was barely conscious. This as resulted in her trying to mirror the violence and do the exact same thing to men in her own fetish art by using the power dynamics of the artist/model. However, it becomes very clear she can not independently perpetrate the same violence as patriarchy. Her relationship with Eddie, the checkout boy from Tesco, is made more complex because she is unable to acknowledge that him being a low-income, man of color, that has also experienced male violence, changes their power dynamic completely. Irina's distorted, violent perspective prevents her from seeing compassion and power dynamics beyond men and women. She seems to spiral further and further, and truly becomes the most unlikeable main character I've ever read. Lastly, I mainly docked points because this was not the most enjoyable read because of how graphic it was and the sexual violence. It did grow on me once I finished and thought about it more. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Perennial for the book!

around 75% it became a 4.

and at the end it’s such an easy 5 star book.

i don’t even want to comment on it, it’s disturbing and impactful.
