I think this may be my favourite book i’ve read so far this year, it was absolutely captivating and had me hooked from the beginning, all whilst having scenes and descriptions that made me want to bury the book underground and never find it again.

What I got from this book was that Irina’s overly sexual photography and her dangerous behaviour was all an analogy for how women are so often ignored in the world that they can do the most disgusting, disturbing things humanly possible, and still no one will bat an eye at them. She can quite literally admit to murder in a fully crowded restaurant, and no one even notices.

The writing in this book was so raw and disturbing, i felt sick to my stomach at times from how graphic some of the scenes were. Definitely check trigger warnings if you’re considering reading this, because it’s certainly not for everyone!

Wow. What a page turner. I don't know if 'enjoyed' is the right word, but I couldn't put this book down. It has all the elements of a great, twisted thriller plus some really unexpected developments... Ending was a tad abrupt for me but made total sense given the pace of Irena's spiraling. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a quick and eye opening read!

Really like Eliza Clark’s writing style but I did find it difficult to get into it because the main character is just awful and entirely unrelatable.  Eventually it makes sense why she’s written like this. I found the first 2/3 of the book to be a little slow paced, until the twist.

what a trip! eliza clark pulled of this unreliable narrator with such a sharp pen and the themes of gender, class and sexism were woven into the narrative brilliantly. the narrator irina is a terrible, manipulative, calculated, cruel and evil person and yet clark always managed to leave her with that crumb of relatability that made you emphasise with her (or at least with her experiences as a woman living under patriarchy) a tiny bit, whilst abhorring yourself for it. i’m really looking forward to “penance”!
