The book is primarily a collection of television interview transcripts. The series from which these transcripts were taken is it itself remarkable since Kenneth Clark, the interviewer, was able to speak with James Baldwin, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963 one after the other. Baldwin is incredibly insightful and deeply critical in his segment since he conducted his interview immediately after an exhausting and frustrating meeting with then Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Baldwin also takes to task both Malcolm and Martin pointing out the perceived weaknesses of each. In the Malcolm X interview, Malcolm provides in a few short passages a concise summary of his life that contrasts well with his autobiography, which wouldn't be published until 2 years later. Notably he mentions his father's involvement with the Garvey movement. Malcolm also responds to Baldwin and takes on King and Eric Lincoln offering some choice words. Rounding out the collection is the interview with Martin Luther King where the minister brings his Christian ethics to the fore. The book is an incredibly quick read and well worth the time, both spent reading it and beforehand hunting it down.
