I feel like I should take a break from poetry…the later sections in the book definitely resonated with me though
idk how can one review poetry in star ranking form? i don’t know if that’s something im capable of, at least not for this collection. it’s gloomy and dreary and dark (which is fitting for the content material) & reads back like history speaking at certain points…left me with an overall feeling of “…in hindsight”, but took me over 2 months to get through it because it was so vivid and haunting.

My favorite is her inauguration poem but there are so many other good ones. I love the section on police violence (although love doesn't fully capture the brutal reality if what is going on--something she captures so well) and the way the pages go from black to gray to white. Her rhymes, vocabulary, and habit of coming words when the situation requires it are my favorite parts. She tackles current topics using old poetry styles so well.
Moderate: Racism, Police brutality
I was so powerfully moved reading "The Hill We Climb", but unfortunately for me this collection of poems felt sub par in comparison. Of course there were some very notable takeaways here and there, but as a whole I struggled to have that profound meaningful connection. In "The Hill We Climb", I felt the heartache, the passion, and as a reader the will to victoriously cheer with the author; whereas here I continued flipping the pages with the desire to only finish the work.
There’s something about poetry that helps unearth emotions with such power.
Gorman’s work is no exception here in her thoughts on life and specifically the United States in the last few years. Her poem about 2020 onward was wonderful: reflecting and putting the confusion of “unprecedented times” to words was so good for my soul. I’ve forgotten so much of that time, but a moments reflection brought many anxious thoughts up all over again. Her poem felt like being a child being guided through it, naming emotions, and now with knowledge we sought then. Incredibly comforting and hopeful in strife.

Puisi sepertinya punya interpretasi masing-masing bagi pembaca. Bagi saya sekumpulan puisi di buku ini berisi paket lengkap antara sedih, biasa-biasa saja, dan penuh harap.
Anxiety is a living body,
Poised besides us like a shadow.
It’s the last creature standing,
The only beast who loves us
Enough to stay
-Fugue
Beberapa puisi mengenai COVID yang saya rasa semua orang bakal paham makna darinya.
Sorry if we’re less friendly—
We had COVID tryna but end things.
Even now handshakes & hugs are like living gifts,
Something we are shocked to grant, be granted
-Fugue
That mask around our ear
Hung itself into the year.
Our mask is no veil, but view.
What are we, if not what we see in another.
-There’s No Power Like Home
Uniknya beberapa puisi diberi anotasi dan catatan sejarah. I will recommend the book to be our remembrance last two years and ahead, once there was uncertainty feeling which sucked us.
