My favorite line in this book is "Poetry is its own prayer." Gorman's collection reads like one long prayer. She employs an impressive range of forms in her poetry, and her voice is a strong, vibrant one.
Read for Popsugar: a book you meant to read in 2022
I, like many others, I'm sure, discovered Amanda Gorman when she delivered her poem for President Biden's inauguration. I was transfixed and rewatched her performance of "The Hill We Climb" many times over. This book includes that poem along with many others. I love the wordplay and creativity in her poetry, and I am definitely looking forward to more from her!

“We were brought here
& all we got was this lousy T-shirt,
This drowsy, free hurt.
Taste our tired, unbroken rage.
Nothing we have witness
This lifetime surprises us.
Disbelief is a luxury
We never possessed,
A pause that never was.
How many times have we wheezed
A dreaded to last all night long.
The truth is, one nation under guns. “

Generally not my genre, but - with the exception of "The Hill We Climb" and a small number of others - nor did it do much to convert me. I especially found it odd that the poet found it necessary to defend their views on the virtues of poetry in so many of the poems themselves.
Beautiful, powerful, lyrical time capsule of 2020. Moving, inspiring, just WOW.
When I watched Amanda Gorman recite the inaugural poem at Joe Bidens inauguration I was spellbound. The way in which the sentences flow and shape make them feel like something more than simply words on a page. The audiobook for this was FANTASTIC because you get to hear Amanda's poetry exactly as it was meant to be delivered. Also, the formats of some of these poems were so creative (I was reading this in the doctor's office and I am sure they were wondering why I was turning the book upside down/tilting it while reading).
