A solid, powerful reckoning with pandemic thoughts (and lack of thoughts). I appreciated the experiments with structure, paraphrasing, and borrowing others' works or documents to create new meaning in a profound and visual way. I finished the book a week ago (and frankly sped through the last half to return it to the library), and I can't remember much except the beginning. The first part of the book was my favorite because it allowed me to envision the grief, shock, and healing of the pandemic from another's perspective, and to know that we, as a population, grappled with similar dilemmas.

Amanda, Amanda, Amanda. Thank you for your gift to this world.

This is what my heart needed. It was not always easy reading - this book is a collection of poetry that is about the pandemic and grief. It is healing but also very heavy. My favorite was “Life”. But there were so many beautiful lines that spoke to me and resonated.

“Love is justified by loving.
Like you, we are haunted & human.
You, like us, are haunted & healing.”

Amazing! I am utterly floored at the descriptive and insightful play on words that Amanda uses in this beautiful collection of poems. I loved the dual meanings she used and found myself re-reading and pondering so many lines. There are way too many beautiful words to quote. I highly recommend this one!

Where do I even begin. This books displays grief in its rawest form but also looks forward to a bright hope. Amanda Gorman’s work is full of love and loss, rage and forgiveness, pain and healing. Every person should read this book!

Poetry was beautiful. Made me think, feel and remember. Inaugural poem was outstanding. If only we were heeding her words under the current administration. Some of the poems were a bit confusing to me but overall a solid book of poetry.

I loved the themes that the poems in this book focuses on (quarantine, racism, and more). I also liked how the author was inspired by and used different items in the poetry (like advertisements from businesses right after quarantine was lifted or historical documents).

The inaugural poem is beautiful, as are some others. Some just confused me.

2.5 stars

I liked some parts of it, others seemed disconnected or out of place. Poetry is not always my thing though, so I don't know if I am one to judge based off the Genre.
