As moving as I found The Hill We Climb, this collection didn't really connect with me.

We covered Amanda Gorman in a special poetry month episode of Howe's Things: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/the-hill-we-climb

Besides “The Hill We Climb,” my favorites were the researched poems and the found poems adapted from various sources. The connections between humanity across timelines in this book were beautifully crafted and often felt like the kind of academic exercise I miss most. I look forward to reading more of Gorman’s poetry in the future.

You. Must. Read. This. Book. It absolutely SHATTERED me. And then it put me back together, more compassionate and understanding than I was before reading it. If it makes you uncomfortable, that’s because it’s supposed to. _ _ _ _ _ [Gated] was absolutely beautiful and my personal favorite.

“Non-being, i.e., distance from society — social distance — / is the very heritage of the oppressed. Which means to / the oppressor, social distance is a humiliation. It is to be / something less than free, or worse, someone less-than-white.”

This book made me think about the world from a completely different perspective and if I could give it 10000000000 stars, I absolutely would. This book is a blessing and you need it in your life as soon as possible.

beautiful poetry, i don’t think i was ready to read a book so focused on the pandemic quite yet

Such great writing by Amanda Gorman, poetry that speaks to the soul!

I think I was probably the wrong demographic for a book like this. I enjoyed some of the poems relating to healthcare, but overall I found this collection to be a bit dull.

I sometimes struggle with poetry and I got a little lost in the middle, but gosh some of these just struck me. I found the pandemic ones especially moving. 3.5 stars, rounded up, because the sections I loved, I really loved.
